Bulk Cattle Feed, #0314

Commercial cattle feeding programs should be designed around the nutritional requirements of the animals being fed. Growing cattle, replacement heifers, mature cows and finishing animals can have substantially different requirements. University of Minnesota Extension emphasizes that cattle diets should be appropriately balanced and that feed intake, animal type and production stage are important considerations. Feeding Young Cattle: A Practical Guide to Hay, Forage and Healthy Growth

A bulk format can be especially useful for producers managing substantial livestock numbers. It allows feed to be stored and distributed using appropriate bins, augers, mixers or other handling equipment. Proper storage is important for maintaining feed quality and minimizing losses caused by moisture, contamination or deterioration.

Commercial Cattle Nutrition

Feed quality control is an important part of a successful livestock operation. Ingredient and finished-feed testing can help producers understand whether the actual nutrient content is consistent with expectations. University of Minnesota Extension recommends representative sampling and laboratory analysis when evaluating feed ingredients and formulated feeds.

For operations using mixed rations, the feed can be combined with forage, grains, protein sources, minerals and other ingredients according to the nutritional requirements of the herd. Total mixed rations are designed to provide a more consistent nutrient supply when properly formulated and mixed.

Feed Storage and Handling

Proper storage should be a priority when purchasing large quantities. Feed should be protected from excessive moisture, pests and contamination. Storage equipment should be appropriate for the physical characteristics of the product, and older inventory should be managed appropriately to maintain freshness.

Producers should also monitor cattle after introducing a new feed. Changes to a ration should be made carefully, particularly when moving animals between different feeding programs. Feed intake, body condition, manure consistency and overall animal performance can provide useful management information.

Choosing Commercial Cattle Feed

When purchasing Bulk Cattle Feed, #0314, buyers should confirm the exact product specification, guaranteed analysis, package or delivery quantity, storage requirements and recommended feeding instructions. If the product is being used as part of a complete ration, a livestock nutritionist can help determine how it fits alongside forage and other feed ingredients.

For commercial cattle operations, purchasing formulated feed in bulk can provide a convenient approach to feed planning and inventory management. However, the product should always be used according to its label and matched to the nutritional needs of the animals receiving it. Follow Us On Facebook
